Prof. Hossam Haick of the Technion Elected Fellow of the National Academy of Inventors

The selection is a prestigious international recognition of his groundbreaking achievements and his impact on global innovation.

Professor Hossam Haick of the Wolfson Faculty of Chemical Engineering at the Technion – Israel Institute of Technology has been elected a Fellow of the U.S. National Academy of Inventors (NAI). This highly prestigious title is considered the highest professional honor awarded to inventors in the United States and worldwide. It reflects broad and significant recognition of Prof. Haick’s scientific achievements, his groundbreaking inventions, and the global impact of his work in health, technology, and education.

Prof. Haick is among a select group of researchers and inventors worldwide who have completed the full innovation cycle: from basic scientific discovery, through technological development, to real-world impact that touches the lives of millions. In an academic landscape where basic and applied science are often separate, he stands out as someone who bridges these worlds, translating deep scientific discoveries into clinical and technological tools with global influence. His work led to the emergence of a new scientific field – volatilomics, which focuses on volatile biomarkers and chemical signals that characterize disease states.

Prof. Haick is a pioneer in identifying molecular signatures of diseases through breath and skin analysis. This breakthrough has enabled the development of rapid, non-invasive diagnostic methods that produce accurate results within minutes and have been validated in numerous clinical centers worldwide. In addition, his group has developed smart patches for advanced sensing in remote medicine and robotics, as well as molecular imaging technologies based on chemical signatures that require no radiation, enabling early detection and personalized diagnosis.

On the industrial and applied side, Prof. Haick holds dozens of patents and has founded several startup companies based on his inventions. These companies have contributed to the implementation of revolutionary technologies in diagnostics, wearable devices, and electronic sensing. He also founded and leads seven European Union consortia, comprising more than 70 partners across four continents, promoting the development and clinical application of advanced medical technologies on a global scale.

In the academic arena, Prof. Haick has published more than 500 scientific papers and authored two books in the field of sensing and volatile biomarkers. He is considered an influential educator in scientific innovation and has supervised more than 110 graduate and postdoctoral students, many of whom now lead research groups and technology companies. The online course he developed on nanotechnology and nanosensors – the first of its kind in the world – has reached more than one million learners from 87 countries.

The official induction ceremony for the National Academy of Inventors took place on June 4, 2026, at the iconic Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles. The event is considered a major international stage for presenting breakthrough ideas, shaping global discussions, and advancing the future of innovation. During the ceremony, Prof. Haick will receive a medal, certificate, lapel pin, and rosette from the NAI President and the representative of the USPTO (United States Patent and Trademark Office).

Professor Hossam Haick received the 2025 MRS Impact Award

This award honors outstanding individuals who have displayed excellence in areas of science communication, education, broadening participation in materials, mentoring or community engagement, which reflect the Society’s pursuit to advance materials science and technology to improve the quality of life.

Professor Haick was chosen from a group of extraordinary nominees “For the continuous advancement of materials science worldwide through interdisciplinary collaborations, policy shaping, public engagement, education leadership, entrepreneurship, and outreach across all ages and socioeconomic backgrounds”.

According to the World Health Organization#lungcancer is the leading cause of #cancer-related deaths worldwide, accounting for the highest mortality rates among both men and woman. Lung cancer is also often diagnosed at advanced stages when treatment options are limited.

At the LUCIA EU Project, we are working to a better #understanding of lung cancer, to identify and analyse the #riskfactors and improve #earlydetection!

Prof. Hossam Haick is the world leading researcher in publications on non-invasive cancer diagnosis based on volatile compounds

Prof. Haick from the Technion-Israel Institute of Technology, ranked first with 42 publications and 4160 citations, followed by Buszewski Boguslaw from Nicholas Copernicus University with 22 publications and 1709 citations. It is noteworthy that three of the top 10 most productive authors were from the Technion-Israel Institute of Technology and two were from Nicholas Copernicus University.

Professor Hossam Haick received the prestigious Degree of Doctor of Philosophy, Honoris Causa, from University of Haifa

The honorary degree is being awarded In recognition of his groundbreaking achievements and significant contribution to the development of cutting-edge approaches to  non-invasive medical diagnosis of early-stage disease; for his extraordinary abilities to apply his research findings into advanced and efficient medical devices; for his continued investment in the education of a future generation of scientists through an understanding that the best investment is in promoting research and knowledge among young people; for his contribution and extensive community activities that support the integration of technology in the educational system, and for his work to advance higher education in Israel.

Prof. Haick has received the Advanced Alexander von Humboldt Research Award

The award is given to prominent researchers who have significantly influenced their fields of study, provided they maintain some type of cooperation with research institutes in Germany. It is granted in recognition of a researcher’s achievements as a whole – discoveries, theories, and insights.

Prof. Haick received the award for his tremendous contribution to the diagnosis of diseases through innovative markers that he discovered in his research at Technion. These are markers that are present in the breath and skin.

Professor Hossam Haick is included in GOOD Magazine’s 2016 “GOOD 100″

The list includes honorees from 37 countries and sorts them by six categories: health; earth; justice & equality; spaces; information; and stories. This recognition is in honors of the efforts of Prof. Haick to deliver non-invasive diagnostic tools that can contribute for better health being at affordable cost, both in the developed and developing countries.
